Familiar Faces

Logan brought home this free magazine from Aunt Lynn's house (which was from the grocery store Macey's) the other day.

As we were flipping through it we found a few familiar faces.

Hey look! Some of my ol' fellow bloggers are here! It is a shame that this is the first time in months that I have seen them. And to see them I have to open up a magazine!

The Shuffle

A few weeks ago my cousin and fellow blogger, Jaimee had a neat idea for a blog topic that she stole from her one brother that is not blogging.

Basically you take your iPod or whatever mp3 player you have and hit Shuffle and blog about the first 5 songs that come up and list why you like them and why you have them on your iPod.

A good idea is a good idea so I am stealing it from her and doing it today

Mephistopheles' Return - Trans-Siberian Orchestra
Funny that this one would pop up first considering that this my absolutely favorite TSO song off the Beethoven's Last Night album. Most of you know that I have a real big soft spot for musicals and theatrical music and this rock opera is one of my favorites. I don't know why most of the musical songs about the devil are the most rocking and most entertaining and most fun to sing but they are and this one is a fun one.

Ballad Of Dwight Fry - Alice Cooper
"Mommy where's daddy? He's been gone for so long. Do you think he'll ever come home?"
Who would have thought that some of Alice Cooper's best would be his softer ballads. Well, ballads as far as Alice Cooper goes. This long song (clocks in at 6:33) is a real pretty song about a man that is in an insane asylum.

Big Girl (You Are Beautiful) - Mika
O boy. You know how there are some songs on your iPod that only you know are there? Those type of songs that are so cheesy that you are a little embarrassed that you have them? Well, I am coming out the iPod closet. I like Mika. There I said it. I discovered one of his songs from a movie and I really liked it so I got his albums and man are they cheesy.  AND I LOVE THEM.

I feel better now...

This song is probably one of my favorite ones of his. It has a fun beat and fun lyrics.

Dear Friends - Queen
I was a little worried that my favorite band of all-time would not make an appearance but when you have all their catalog on your iPod along with all their concerts and rare stuff, I knew my chances were good. This is one of the shortest songs they have (only 1:09) but it has to be one of their more beautiful and poignant songs that came from one of their earlier albums.

So dear friends
Your love is gone
Only tears to dwell upon
I dare not say
As the wind must blow
So a love is lost
A love is won
Go to sleep and dream again
Soon your hopes will rise
And then from all this gloom
Life can start anew
And there'll be no crying soon

Written by Brian May and sung by Freddie. Only his voice and accompaniment by the piano. I love it because of how simple it is.

Now That You Got Me - Honeymoon Suite
Honeymoon Suite is a Canadian hair metal band and it was the first tapes that I bought. Hair Metal is another love of mine and you never forget your first love and Honeymoon Suite was mine. The whole album is pretty good and I still listen to it but I do it now for more nostalgic purposes. This is one of the better songs of that album. My tape finally gave out and I bought the CD on eBay from Canada.

Random Ramblings

I am so glad that my year-long blogging quest is over because yesterday I was in NO mood to blog. Yesterday was just not a good day. It wasn't anything specific but it was just an accumulation of stuff. But I don't want to get into it.

I know for a fact that I don't miss blogging on Sundays. But you know what I miss most about the 365 Challenge? Reading everyone else's blogs.

WHERE ARE MY FELLOW BLOGGERS AT?

I used to love to log in and see all the blog updates. Now instead of six-seven blogs, I only get a couple. I guess I am going to have to figure out another challenge because I miss reading those blogs. C'mon fellow bloggers! Let's see some blogs!

I have made a new friend named Randy. He is an older gentlemen and we have spent a few hours last week getting to know each other. I met him through another new friend of mine, Leslie Sansone.

Yeah, in an effort to lose some weight and to keep up with exercising, I now do these Walk Away the Pounds videos. And I have to admit that I like them and they are pretty enjoyable and you do get a good workout doing them. Usually videos like these are annoying. They have a host that goes way to fast and is way to cheesy and there are usually other people in the video that are just annoying as all out. I have found that these people are pretty normal and are not cheesy. These walking videos are almost all women, except for my new friend Randy. I am glad he is there so I don't feel so stupid marching around the house with a bunch of ladies.

I recommend them to anyone. In the last two weeks I have already lost the three pounds I gained from eating that EggNog Fudge.

Thanks Randy! You can see him way in the back.

This is my last week of the NaNoWriMo challenge and I am lacking motivation today. I have been writing on the fly with this novel. Not knowing at all where I am going with it. But last night while watching Sportscenter I think I know where to take it. And it is very close to its conclusion! I have written 37,024 words.

At least I don't have a lot of blogs to read so I can concentrate on my writing... *hint hint*

Blogger Reunion Dinner

Last Saturday my fellow bloggers and I decided we need to celebrate completing the 365 Blogging Challenge. We finally decided on a date and we all met halfway at a Red Robin in Layton. Jennifer and Kristy had went to Red Robin with my mom just a week before and they said that they have a new burger that I need to try. When Kristy and I meet Andrea and Steven for dinner we usually end up at Red Robin anyway so Red Robin it was!

I picked up Jennifer and we all headed down to Layton. I was excited to see everyone but I have to admit that I was just as excited to try this new burger. It was a special called the Mount Olympus Burger. An oregano seasoned burger with creamy artichoke and spinach dip, crumbled feta cheese, crisp bacon, romaine lettuce, tomatoes and garlic mayo on a rustic ciabatta bun. Sounds good right?

I am a lucky guy to have dinner with six terrific ladies. I guess I shouldn't complain that I am one of the only guys that blogs.

We made it to Layton and my fellow bloggers (Andrea, Lewis, Crystal and Chelsea) were already there. We waited for just a little bit for our tables but we had to pull Lewis away from her infomercial. Luckily they had it playing in the television by our table. It was great to see everyone, I have met Andrea's family before but I have not seen them since we started and probably a few years before that. But I felt comfortable around them because I felt like I knew them so well.

Kristy and Jennifer wanted to show me the burger special but it was no where to be found. Unfortunately they had took it off the menu! I was so disappointed. They had it just a week ago! Kristy and Jennifer asked about it and the waiter confirmed it. The burger was gone! But luckily for me, Kristy and Jennifer made the guy check to see if they could still make it and we were all happy when he brought back the happy news!

It was a very nice time. The food was fantastic and the company was even better. I wanted to do something nice for my fellow bloggers for taking the challenge so Kristy and I made these cool certificates of achievement and we also bought each blogger a special chocolate bar from Alvey's Chocolates from Logan. Then we parted ways and Jennifer, Kristy and I went to the mall to Dairy Queen. I was very surprised that we didn't run into Andrea and her family since that is what we usually did after dinner when we met Steven and Andrea for dinner.

Thanks to all my fellow bloggers for coming and participating in the challenge. I am glad that you all did this, it would have been a long journey for me to do alone and I don't know if I would have made it.

Now we just need to do another challenge so we have the excuse to meet again for some food and fun. I hope this is not the last time I get to visit these people.

Happy Anniversary!

Day ***

It doesn't matter what day it is! I have officially finished my year-long blogging odyssey.

And I have mixed feelings about it. It seems so anti-climatic. One day I am working on it and suddenly the next day I am done. I think that is the biggest reason (aside from having the opportunity to eat out) why I want to have some sort of celebration.

I think I will miss the daily challenge to come up with something to write about. But after thinking about it, I think I am going to try to stick with a 5-day schedule. No Sundays (unless I really really want too) and I get one floating holiday per week that I can take off. I hope that I don't become lazy and cheat myself out of blogging.

Blogging for the year definitely presented some challenges but I honestly feel that I am a better person for doing it. Since I like lists so much I thought it would be fun to do a List-Mania on what I have learned this past year blogging.

In no particular order:

1) I Learned About Myself
That sounds so cliche' but it is true. One of the biggest benefits that I got out of blogging was posting my goals and New Year's Resolutions online and then being accountable for them. I didn't think I could motivate myself to exercise and run the way I did this past year. In the back of my mind I knew I had people reading my blog and I didn't want to disappoint them. I wanted to prove to them and myself that I can accomplish goals. I look forward to hitting my year mark with my resolutions/goals and then making new ones and blogging about how I am going about to conquer them.

I'll miss you Spaghetti Cat...

2) I Learned Things I Didn't Know About My Family
This was a big one. In preparing some of my blog posts I had to do a little research and found some interesting nuggets of information. But in reading my sister's and cousin's blogs I have been introduced to a bunch of stuff that I didn't know. Take my sister for instance; I had no idea that she was such a big reader. That was news to me! And I thought I knew my cousins before but apparently I don't know them as well as I thought I did. I had no idea how difficult breaking your femurs could be; I had not heard all the stabbing stories. I am happy that my sister and cousins have joined in with the blogging. I feel like I know them so much better and feel closer to them.

3) Meeting New People
The cool thing about meeting new people is being exposed to new ideas. I had met Andrea's family before but I didn't know them. And I was glad to have had the chance to get to know them. I learned to appreciate soccer for example. I also learned different writing styles, I think I changed the way I blogged because of their influence. I also saw a lot of good examples, I saw a lot of qualities that I would like to develop. Because I had other people aside from family taking the challenge, it motivated me to blog my best.

4) A Record of Important Things/Events
I took a quick glance at my blog the other night and found a ton of stuff that I had already forgotten. I am thankful that I took the time to blog about events while they were still fresh. The family get-togethers, the Church events, the little moments with my family. Now I see why it is important to have a diary/journal. Now I can look back on those things and remember them like it was just yesterday.

The Karma Police were integral to my blog.

5) It Surprised Me Who Was Reading My Blog
I knew most of the people that were reading my blog. But it did take me by surprise by some of the e-mails and comments my blog received. Some people in my neighborhood were reading my blog, some old classmates from even elementary school have contacted me. This was fantastic. Remember when I blogged about one of my biggest regrets in school? I have been absolved from that since she took the time to e-mail me after reading that blog. And that incident happened over twenty years ago!

I got much more out of blogging than I thought I would. I still have things that I want to record and I know that I will continue to have experiences that I want to record. So I will definitely continue to blog.

I do urge anyone that has not taken the challenge to get on the blogging bus and do it. It is a sacrifice and you will have to put in some hard work but it is well worth your effort. I hope that my fellow bloggers will continue to blog.

I also want to give a shout-out to my fellow bloggers for accomplishing this mighty goal. And for my fellow bloggers that are in the middle of doing it. I support you completely. Thanks to all those that supported me in blogging. I appreciate your effort.

To anyone that is reading these words... STOP reading and pat yourself on the back.

Thanks Folks!

Random Ramblings

Day 331

It's amazing how much my mood improves when the Jets win.

Yesterday Kristy was put in as Young Woman's President. We didn't think it was going to happen but it did. She was called a couple of weeks ago and I know that the ward had some logistics issues with who is serving where. But they made the calling official yesterday. Kristy will do a great job. She has some fantastic counselors and advisers and the Young Woman themselves are awesome. The unfortunate thing is that she will be a little more busy than normal. But the advantage is that I get to spend more time with Young Woman. I have said this before and I am sure this is not the last time I will say it but I love being around the Young Woman. They are such great examples and they make me feel young too.

My calling is still in limbo. I was called into the Elders Quorum as the 2nd counselor and our President moved about a month and half ago. I know a new President has been called but that is all I know. Nothing will happen for another two weeks or so. At least I am not the new President but I am eager to find out where I am going to be placed. Because knowing this ward, they have a spot waiting for me.

October is one of my favorite months. The air turns a little crisp, you get to wear comfier clothes, baseball season is winding down, football season is in full swing, basketball season is just a few weeks away. Scary shows are being shown on TV (I am a sucker for horror movies) and Halloween is almost here, and I LOVE Halloween candy.

This October will be special for a couple of reasons, I am a week away from going to The Halloween Hootenanny Tour! I am so giddy, I have been listening to Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie non-stop in preparation for the concert. I am not familiar with Alice Cooper as much but I am getting a kick out of discovering his music. Lots of fun stuff.

I just don't know what to wear.

I was thinking of wearing this...

Only kidding. I am not sure what to wear, all I know is that I better wear black.

The other special occasion is that this blog will officially end October 31st. I don't know what I will do with the blog. Blogging has become a habit and I think I will miss doing it everyday. What are my fellow bloggers going to do when it is all over?

Happy Birthday Josh!

Day 322

What a lame post yesterday. I did have a lot of fun winning all those games against Eric and there is nothing like racking up 514 rushing yards against him. But I feel like I have reached a low in my roller coaster. I get like this sometimes (it would be interesting to check back on my blog and see if maybe I am cyclic) where I just feel blah.

So today I plan on reading some comics and drinking some Dew. I think it is time to re-read my collection of X-Men comics starting with this huge hardcover.

I think I might be a little nervous for tomorrow too. And surprisingly this has nothing to do with the big Jets/Patriots game that I get to watch (even though that makes a little nervous/excited too) but I am anxious to see what happens at Church tomorrow. I just might get released from my current calling which means I soon might have another calling. Our small little choir is singing tomorrow too and my ace-in-the-hole won't be there to help me get through it. There is this kind lady in the ward that sings tenor with me because we don't have enough guys and she is out of town this weekend. I have this ugly gut feeling that I will be the only tenor there. We have practice here in a few hours and I hope I can catch my parts.

Yesterday was my cousin Josh's birthday and I totally forgot to blog about it. I told myself that I would blog about my fellow blogger's birthdays (no other family members get that privilege embarrassment) and I totally skipped out.

I don't have many pictures of my cousin Josh. But Jeremy sent me this pic while I was on my LDS mission in New York.

Jeremy wrote this on the back. I think it is okay to reveal this now.

It is how I will always remember Josh.

I have many fond memories of my cousin Josh. He was just as into Star Wars as Jeremy and he loved video games. I remember spending hours playing the old Atari basketball game, the Nintendo Ten Yard Fight game and getting so competitive and hating each other.

Ahhh.... good times. We didn't just play video games either, I also remember the highly competitive basketball games in the driveway at Greeley.

Josh also served an LDS Mission around the same time only he was on the West Coast while I took the East Coast. He served in Los Angeles and in the hood.

Like I said, I don't have many pictures of Josh. This was taken at the SLC airport when I flew out to New York. I guess he looks sad since he had to go to the West Coast instead of the East. I guess that makes you Tupac and me Biggie.

Happy Birthday Josh!*

*better late than never right?

Happy Labor Day!

Day 310

Can you really wish someone a Happy Labor Day?

Aren't you really asking someone to smile and be happy while they work and sweat?

Well today is a little special. Not only is it Labor Day (I am sure I can make a ton of jokes about Aunt Julie being in labor) but it is also my fellow blogger and cousin Jaimee's birthday!

Sadly, Jaimee is a girl and growing up I wanted to play with the boy cousins and I had Jeremy and Josh to play with instead. (Jordan coming into the scene a bit later) But what was great (and still is great about Jamiee) is that being a girl didn't matter. She played just as hard as the rest of us. She was no different at all, she was one of us.

Unfortunately I don't have any embarrassing pictures of her to use.

I remember one occasion when it was just Jaimee and I. Aunt Julie came out to Utah with just Jaimee and my mom and Julie went down to Salt Lake to go shopping leaving Jaimee and I by ourselves. Now you would think that we had a boring time but that was not the case (no pun intended). I remember having a blast with her (at least I had fun, hmmmm, wonder what she thought). We walked down to Jed's (the local burger bar) and ate some lunch and then came home and we watched MTV and sang along with the artists. We watched some movies and played games. It was nice spending some time with just her and getting to know her. Now with her blog, it has been awesome to get to know her even more and getting to know her sweet family.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JAIMEE!

Thanks for being a good example and a great cousin. One day we will have to run a 5K together.

Random Ramblings

Day 275

My cousin Jaimee made a comment on my blog that really excited me.

Jaimee said...
Didn't you start November 1st? Then you should just have three months left... August, September, October!! Because I started a month after you and I have four months left! :)

Obviously I cannot count. But math has never been my strong suit so it comes as no surprise. I am pretty excited that I have only three months left. I still have not decided if I want to continue daily blogging. More than likely I will continue to do so even though I might not do it daily. I might skip Sundays especially with football coming up and it seems like my Sundays are steadily filling up with meetings and Church stuff.

I do think that a major celebration is in store for when myself and my fellow bloggers have finished this year-long trek. We should all try to meet up in person and celebrate by going out to dinner with everyone. And if we do it before our blogs officially end, we will have something to blog about. ;)

But for an end there is always a beginning. My cousin Josh has joined the blogging ranks.

Speaking of cousins... my Aunt Margo just sent me this picture. From left to right: Angie, fellow blogger and sister Jennifer, Kati Jo, Wyatt, Misty, Blake, Me and Johnny and fellow bloggers and cousins Josh and Jeremy

I would like to give Josh's funny blog a shout out! You can follow The Original JC by making with the clicky on the link. Glad to have you aboard Josh!

Out of curiosity, I quickly scanned every one's blogs (I checked the blog links on the side of your blogs) and it looks like (unofficially) there are 22 fellow bloggers that have taken the challenge. Some have stopped, some have only done a few entries but at least they tried. Maybe at the end of my blog I will figure out officially how many people are blogging.

It looks like my wish has unfortunately come true. Our camera bit the dust. Kristy tried to use it yesterday and it just wouldn't turn back on. So we are camera shopping tonight. I have one in mind, we are going to BestBuy to test it out and then I will order it from Amazon since they have it $20 cheaper. I am looking forward to having a new camera to play around with. It is not a real fancy camera but it will be quite a step above our current one.

Kristy washing cherries and Logan pitting them

Logan being a ham

Saturday, Kristy and Logan and I spent a few hours canning some cherries. We found a fantastic deal (24 pounds for $26) and they were the good sweet Bing cherries. We kept a bag to eat and we canned the rest. It didn't take too long since all of us were helping but my palm is sore. We borrowed our neighbor's depitter and I spent hours ramming the pits out of the cherries.

The final product. I think they look pretty.

We did 14 bottles worth for our food storage. Canning season has begun. We have beets and beans coming up shortly. We managed to snag some pics of our cherries before the camera died. Hopefully I won't need it until I get a new one.

World Cup Review

Day 255

Sarah, a friend of mine from England poised the question "So has the World Cup made any of you not interested in football before more interested?"

I think that it helped that we had a friendly competition by drafting teams and facing off with friends. It definitely made me pay more attention than I normally would have. For the dumb picks that I made, (next time I will pay more attention to my picks) I didn't think I did too bad. And it was fun to watch some of the matches. I didn't catch all the games I wanted and I have to admit that I wasn't feeling it during the England/US game. I liked the heavy drama but the ending seemed very anti-climatic. It just seems to me that for the last 5 minutes or so all the players were playing for the tie. There just didn't seem any attitude or determination to go for the win.

I didn't do that bad. In fact my friend predicted that I would take 8th overall

But the next few games were more exciting and I can see why people get such a kick (bad pun fully intended) out of the World Cup.

GOOOOAAAAAALLLLLL!

Next time the World Cup comes around I am sure I will catch a few matches even if I am not part of some competition pool. I still consider myself to be more of a casual fan than a hardcore fan but it is still early and that may change. I have family (and fellow bloggers) that are soccer fans and they go to Real Salt Lake games and now I am more libel to go to one of those too.

So the answer is yes. I am more interested in soccer and that will continue to grow. I don't think it will ever replace my obsession with football or hockey but I can definitely see it getting stronger.

Happy Birthday Jeremy!

Day 252

I am in awe of those bloggers that try to cover every one's birthday on their blogs. I thought about doing that since I would have something to blog about the majority of the time but then I thought of the workload and I remembered that I don't remember occasions like these. And I would feel incredibly stupid if I accidentally missed someone. I am horrible at remembering birthdays and stuff like that. So I decided against covering all the birthdays aside from my own family.

But I have made a special case (Get it? Case - case?) for my fellow bloggers. One of the biggest advantages of blogging with my fellow bloggers is that you will not miss their birthday. And really, I have only a few extra blogs to cover and they don't come for awhile. And I would be carrying some extra guilt since they wrote about me on my birthday. (wink, wink)

And today is a special day, it is my cousin and fellow newbie blogger Jeremy's birthday!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

As he mentioned on his blog Jeremy are close. Maybe it was because our birthdays are so close to each other, personally I think it is because we knew each other in Heaven before this life. And we saw what crazy families we would be apart of and we vowed to try to strengthen and keep ourselves sane. (Only kidding folks... out families are not that crazy)

I guess I was the exhibisionist of the family eh?

I love this picture of us with Grandpa. Who would have thought that we would both have the same hairstyle now?

We have a lot of similarities. We both like to write and he is perhaps the biggest influence on my writing. I started this blog because I wanted to have some sort of record of my life. I regret that I never kept a journal like Jeremy has. I am in awe, I mean I am completely jealous of his tenacious ability to write and keep a journal. Jeremy also has a beautiful way with words. And not only can he creatively write, he has the best penmanship! Seriously, I wish I could write cursive the way he does.

Now I just need him to sit down and crank out that great American novel! I know he has it in him. I am looking in your direction this November Jeremy!

I hope you don't mind me sharing this. This was one of the novel ideas he had that he shared with me. Maybe this November you should write a rough draft or add another chapter? ;)

I actually created a character based directly on Jeremy. Remember Jetstream?

There are many things that Jeremy knows about me but no one else does. He was very instrumental while I was serving my LDS mission to New York. He inspired me to keep a daily journal (which I did) of those two years. I have shared with him parts of that journal so he knows stuff that I have never shared with anyone else. He also wrote me regularly while I was in New York. His letters were always so uplifting and full of creativity. What I enjoyed most of his letters was his honesty. Not only did we share what we thought and felt, we also shared writing ideas. On my P-Days (the one day of the week you had off while on the mission) I would write and plot stories and then send them to Jeremy. I would get some valuable feedback but he would also send me his story ideas and I fed off of that energy. Thanks Jeremy! You helped me through many difficult times on my mission.  I believe it was during this time that we coined the phrase "Soul Cousins".

I still have all your old letters from the mission field. I love that you sent me a Star Wars card. We must have asked to be sent to Earth so we could see Star Wars while growing up.

I have some fond memories of spending time with Jeremy and all the CaseClan. I was lucky that I had a cousin my age (remember, I am still older than you!) that I could hang out with. You have been through so much and I have never heard you complain or utter a word of despair and I admire that. I am so glad that you have taken this blogging challenge. I think I will continue past my time to keep you company during this year-long adventure.

I hope you have a great birthday. And may the Force be with you!

What Would You Do Again?

Day 215

Here are the next set of questions. Some of them were simple to answer, others I had some difficulties with. But as always, they were interesting.

So let's get on to the questions!

12. You meet a wizard in downtown Chicago. The wizard tells you he can make you more attractive if you pay him money. When you ask how this process works, the wizard points to a random person on the street. You look at this random stranger. The wizard says, "I will now make them a dollar more attractive." He waves his magic wand. Ostensibly, this person does not change at all; as far as you can tell, nothing is different. But--somehow--this person is suddenly a little more appealing. The tangible difference is invisible to the naked eye, but you can't deny that this person is vaguely sexier. This wizard has a weird rule, though--you can only pay him once. You can't keep giving him money until you're satisfied. You can only pay him one lump sum up front.

How much cash do you give the wizard?

If the wizard could promise that my baldness would be cured, I would give him some money. I don't think I need to be any more good looking/sexier than I am now. I'm married so I am not looking for anything. And that isn't just an excuse for me to look bad because I am married. I am not getting any younger and the older I get the more worn out my body becomes. But Kristy loves me no matter how I look. Honestly, I rarely have cash on me anyway. More than likely, I would probably give him the few dollars I might have in my wallet and call it good. It wouldn't hurt anyway and I might just get some hair back.

13. Every person you have ever slept with is invited to a banquet where you are the guest of honor. No one will be in attendance except you, the collection of your former lovers, and the catering service. After the meal, you are asked to give a fifteen-minute speech to the assembly.

What do you talk about?

Now this is an easy one since it would only be Kristy and I in attendance. I am not sure what I would talk about. I would probably talk about how we met and how I knew "she was the one". And then tell some jokes and see what it is like being a stand-up comedian.

14. For reasons that cannot be explained, cats can suddenly read at a twelfth-grade level. They can't talk and they can't write, but they can read silently and understand the text. Many cats love this new skill, because they now have something to do all day while they lay around the house; however, a few cats become depressed, because reading forces them to realize the limitations of their existence (not to mention the utter frustration of being unable to express themselves).

This being the case, do you think the average cat would enjoy Garfield, or would cats find this cartoon to be an insulting caricature?

I think a few cats would absolutely hate Jim Davis and his creation. But like most cats, I think they personally wouldn't give a flying fig. They are still fundamentally cats and therefore don't care one way or another.

This cat doesn't look too interested in Garfield.

15. You have a brain tumor. Though there is no discomfort at the moment, this tumor would unquestionably kill you in six months. However, your life can (and will) be saved by an operation; the only downside is that there will be a brutal incision to your frontal lobe. After the surgery, you will be significantly less intelligent. You will still be a fully functioning adult, but you will be less logical, you will have a terrible memory, and you will have little ability to understand complex concepts or difficult ideas. The surgery is in two weeks.

How do you spend the next fourteen days?

This is a difficult one since I do not know how I would truly act if I knew I was going to die in six months. But if I am going to die, I am going to die. I would rather have quality of life than quantity. During the two weeks I would definitely get a second opinion but aside from that I would make plans on how I want to spend the rest of my life. I wouldn't want to become a burden on Kristy and Logan. It would be sad for Logan to grow up without his dad but how much help would I be anyway? The biggest thing that gets me would be that I would have a terrible memory. I wouldn't be much use for my family and society.

16. Someone builds and optical portal that allows you to see a vision of your own life in the future (it’s essentially a crystal ball that shows a randomly selected image of what your life will be like in twenty years). You can only see into this portal for thirty seconds. When you finally peer into the crystal, you see yourself in a living room, two decades older than you are today. You are watching a Canadian football game, and you are extremely happy. You are wearing a CFL jersey. Your chair is surrounded by books and magazines that promote the Canadian Football League, and there are CFL pennants covering your walls. You are alone in the room, but you are gleefully muttering about historical moments in Canadian football history. It becomes clear that—for some unknown reason—you have become obsessed with Canadian football. And this future is static and absolute; no matter what you do, this future will happen. The optical portal is never wrong. This destiny cannot be changed.

The next day, you are flipping through television channels and randomly come across a pre-season CFL game between the Toronto Argonauts and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Knowing your inevitable future, do you now watch it?

I don't think being obsessed with Canadian football would be all that bad. Obviously it will make me very happy in the future so why fight it? On the other hand, being a comic book and sci-fi geek, I would love to try to avoid Canadian football. I wouldn't watch the game (how the heck did the CFL get on TV here anyway?) to try to fight the future and create some sort of alternate reality. BUT I then would come to conclusion that why should I fight destiny? Especially since I will be very happy in this future. What if I fight watching the CFL and I lead a disastrous and unhappy life? Should I take my chances? I would fight it for the first little while but ultimately I would succumb. At least I would be happy.

Warren Moon played with the Edmonton Eskimos. The CFL can't be that bad right?

17. You are sitting in an empty bar (in a town you’ve never before visited), drinking Bacardi with a soft-spoken acquaintance you barely know. After an hour, a third individual walks into the tavern and sits by himself, and you ask your acquaintance who the new man is. “Be careful of that guy,” you are told. “He is a man with a past.” A few minutes later, a fourth person enters the bar; he also sits alone. You ask your acquaintance who this new individual is. “Be careful of that guy, too,” he says. “He is a man with no past.”

Which of these two people do you trust less?

Everyone has a past. I wouldn't trust either of them (including the guy telling me this) but ultimately I don't trust the man with no past more. It seems like a man with no past would have no fear for the future. If he doesn't pay attention to the past he seems to me like he would have no remorse. The guy who has a past may have taken lessons from it and learned from it, even though that doesn't necessarily mean he would make the correct choices this time. But I would rather take my chances with the guy with the past. I wouldn't be able to get a read on the man with no past.

18. You have won a prize. The prize has two options, and you can choose either (but not both). The first option is a year in Europe with a monthly stipend of $2,000. The second option is ten minutes on the moon.

Which option do you select?

While having money in Europe would be tempting, I would love to visit England and Greece and spend money freely I think I would rather go to the moon. I can always look up to the moon and see it anytime but how many times would I be able to look up and see the Earth? Besides with all the turmoil in Europe now I might not be able to have fun in Europe. And really, I could go to Europe at anytime. The moon would be a chance of a lifetime. So the moon it is.

Yeah, that would be worth it.

19. Your best friend is taking a nap on the floor of your living room. Suddenly, you are faced with a bizarre existential problem: This friend is going to die unless you kick them (as hard as you can) in the rib cage. If you don’t kick them while they slumber, they will never wake up. However, you can never explain this to your friend; if you later inform them that you did this to save their life, they will also die from that. So you have to kick a sleeping friend in the ribs, and you can’t tell them why.

Since you cannot tell your friend the truth, what excuse will you fabricate to explain this (seemingly inexplicable) attack?

I would call another friend of mine and tell him what was going on and have him come over. And then I would kick my sleeping friend and then tell my sleeping friend that my other friend bet me that I wouldn't kick him. Guys do stupid things all the time and I might be able to get away with it if I used the excuse of a bet. And if that sleeping guy is truly my friend he would forgive me. At least at some point he would.

20. For whatever the reason, two unauthorized movies are made about your life. The first is an independently released documentary, primarily comprised of interviews with people who know you and bootleg footage from your actual life. Critics are describing the documentary as “brutally honest and relentlessly fair.” Meanwhile, Columbia Tri-Star has produced a big-budget biopic of your life, casting major Hollywood stars as you and all your acquaintances; though the movie is based on actual events, screenwriters have taken some liberties with the facts. Critics are split on the artistic merits of this fictionalized account, but audiences love it.

Which film would you be most interested in seeing?

I would want to see both of them even though I would be afraid of watching the independent film. Just who did they dig up for that film and what would they really cover? I would rather watch the Hollywood version since I would like to see who they cast to play me and what liberties they made with my life. I think I would get a kick out of that one more. I already lived the documentary, I don't know if I need to see it again.

21. Imagine you could go back to the age of five and relive the rest of your life, knowing everything that you know now. You will re-experience your entire adolescence with both the cognitive ability of an adult and the memories of everything you’ve learned form having lived your life previously.

Would you lose your virginity earlier or later than you did the first time around (and by how many years)?

Nothing would change. I would lose it the same time I did in this lifetime. It would be interesting to see what different choices I would make. I wonder if I would lose my virginity to the same person? I would be making different choices which might result in me meeting different people so who knows?

22. You work in an office. Generally, you are popular with your coworkers. However, you discover that there are currently two rumors circulating the office gossip mill, and both involve you. The first rumor is that you got drunk at the office holiday party and had sex with one of your married coworkers. This rumor is completely true, but most people don’t believe it. The second rumor is that you have been stealing hundreds of dollars of office supplies (and then selling them to cover a gambling debt). This rumor is completely false, but virtually everyone assumes it is factual.

Which of these two rumors is most troubling to you?

I think the gambling rumor would bug me the most since it is NOT true. I guess the best thing would be to just come clean about it and get the truth out. I don't want to be known as a thief and a liar.

23. Consider this possibility:
a. Think about deceased TV star John Ritter.

b. Now, pretend Ritter had never become famous. Pretend he was never affected by the trappings of fame, and try to imagine what his personality would have been like.

c. Now, imagine that this person—the unfamous John Ritter—is a character in a situation comedy.

d. Now, you are also a character in this sitcom, and the unfamous John Ritter character is your sitcom father.

e. However, this sitcom is actually your real life. In other words, you are living inside a sitcom: Everything about our life is a construction, featuring the unfamous John Ritter playing himself (in the role of your TV father). But this is not a sitcom. This is your real life.

How would you feel about this?

I love John Ritter. I don't think this would be a problem. I think I would be more disturbed that I was living in a sitcom than having John Ritter be my dad. And hopefully that means he might be living with Janet and Chrissy. That would be a plus.

And if the Ropers were my real neighbors? That would seal the deal!

What You Would You Do?

Day 214

My friend Rory has been reading some Chuck Klosterman recently and he posted on our board Chuck's 23 hypothetical questions from one of his books. There is an excellent article about the author here. We all posted our answers and I was surprised at how they all varied. I posted a couple myself and thought that they would make an excellent blog topic. Fellow bloggers are welcome to do this as well. I am only going to answer the first 11 and get around to the rest sometime this week or the next.

So let's start with Question #1!

1. Let us assume you met a rudimentary magician. Let us assume he can do five simple tricks--he can pull a rabbit out of his hat, he can make a coin disappear, he can turn the ace of spades into the Joker card, and two others in a similar vein. These are his only tricks and he can't learn any more; he can only do these five. HOWEVER, it turns out he's doing these five tricks with real magic. It's not an illusion; he can actually conjure the bunny out of the ether and he can move the coin through space. He's legitimately magical, but extremely limited in scope and influence.

Would this person be more impressive than Albert Einstein?

Even though this magician is pretty impressive, I would say that Albert Einstein was more impressive. The magician's accomplishments pales in comparison to Einstein's. And besides, I can learn from Einstein, I can try (and the word is try) to understand everything he understood. Knowing the magician (unless he is GOB from Arrested Development) he would never share his secrets with me so really all the magician can do is just show me his tricks. Which would get old.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it you lousy street magician!

2. Let us assume a fully grown, completely healthy Clydesdale horse has his hooves shackled to the ground while his head is held in place with thick rope. He is conscious and standing upright, but completely immobile. And let us assume that--for some reason--every political prisoner on earth (as cited by Amnesty International) will be released from captivity if you can kick this horse to death in less than twenty minutes. You are allowed to wear steel-toed boots.

Would you attempt to do this?

Have you ever seen a Clydesdale horse up close? They are freaking humongous! I don't think I would be able to kill it in twenty minutes. Especially if he was standing, my head would barely reach his leg. I guess I could try to break its legs since people usually put down a horse when it breaks its legs. I guess political prisoners would win out and be set free. I think I would rather have them free instead of child predators.

3. Let us assume there are two boxes on a table. In one box, there is a relatively normal turtle; in the other, Adolf Hitler's skull. You have to select one of these items for your home. If you select the turtle, you can't give it away and you have to keep it alive for two years; if either of these parameters are not met, you will be fined $999 by the state. If you select Hitler's skull, you are required to display it in a semi-prominent location in your living room for the same amount of time, although you will be paid a stipend of $120 per month for doing so. Display of the skull must be apolitical.

Which option do you select?

Money talks. I hate to admit it but in this case, I would take the moola and house Hitler's skull. Aside from being an interesting conversation piece, I could charge people to look at if I wanted too. And I also trust that people that I invite into my home would realize that I am not affiliated or empathizes with the Nazis.

4. Genetic engineers at Johns Hopkins University announce that they have developed a so-called "super gorilla." Though the animal cannot speak, it has a sign language lexicon of over twelve thousand words, an I.Q. of almost 85, and--most notably--a vague sense of self-awareness. Oddly, the creature (who weighs seven hundred pounds) becomes fascinated by football. The gorilla aspires to play the game at its highest level and quickly develops the rudimentary skills of a defensive end. ESPN analyst Tom Jackson speculates that this gorilla would be "borderline unblockable" and would likely average six sacks a game (although Jackson concedes the beast might be susceptible to counters and misdirection plays). Meanwhile, the gorilla has made it clear he would never intentionally injure any opponent.

You are commissioner of the NFL: Would you allow this gorilla to sign with the Oakland Raiders?

I don't think I would allow the gorilla to play. He is more important to science than he is to the NFL. On the other hand, if the gorilla would like to replace Al Davis as owner of the Oakland Raiders, I would have no problem with that. The Raiders might be better off. But then it might set a precedent, do we allow ANY animal in if it gets intelligent?

"As long as the gorilla can injure someone, I'm good!"

5. You meet your soul mate. However, there is a catch: Every three years, someone will break both of your soul mate's collarbones with a Crescent wrench, and there is only one way you can stop this from happening: You must swallow a pill that will make every song you hear--for the rest of your life--sound as if it's being performed by the band Alice in Chains. When you hear Creedence Clearwater Revival on the radio, it will sound (to your ears) like it's being played by Alice in Chains. If you see Radiohead live, every one of their tunes will sound like it's being covered by Alice in Chains. When you hear a commercial jingle on TV, it will sound like Alice in Chains; if you sing to yourself in the shower, your voice will sound like deceased Alice vocalist Layne Staley performing a capella (but it will only sound this way to you).

Would you swallow the pill?

Now this is a hard one. I love music and I love to sing. I feel that music is a huge part of my life. But then would I want Kristy to get her collarbones snapped every 3 years? It is only 3 years though. More than likely I would sacrifice my music to save her from such a horrific injury. Unless Kristy would be willing to take the beating...

Kristy has just informed me that she would be willing to get her collarbones broken. Her reasoning is she is already "old and brittle".

6. At long last, someone invents "the dream VCR." This machine allows you to tape an entire evening's worth of your own dreams, which you can then watch at your leisure. However, the inventor of the dream VCR will only allow you to use this device of you agree to a strange caveat: When you watch your dreams, you must do so with your family and your closest friends in the same room. They get to watch your dreams along with you. And if you don't agree to this, you can't use the dream VCR.

Would you still do this?

I'm torn on this one. I don't know if I would want to subject my family to my terrifying nightmares. Just ask Kristy, I have pretty vivid dreams and most of them are not nice. On the other hand, I would love to revisit them. I am sure I have blocked out parts of my dream or simply forgotten them when I wake. Now I have this cool gadget where I can replay them. But then I dream about tornadoes all the time so I am not sure I would want to see them again. But on the other hand I have dreamed where I was an X-Man. (I was Havok). I think I am leaning on letting people see my dreams as long as they remember that they are just dreams. And they might see some nudity since a lot of my dreams involve people walking in on me while I shower.

7. Defying all expectation, a group of Scottish marine biologists capture a live Loch Ness Monster. In an almost unbelievable coincidence, a bear hunter in the Pacific Northwest shoots a Sasquatch in the thigh, thereby allowing zoologists to take the furry monster into captivity. These events happen on the same afternoon. That evening, the president announces he may have thyroid cancer and will undergo a biopsy later that week.

You are the front page editor of The New York Times: What do you play as the biggest story?

As a responsible journalist I would run the President story. But then the Sasquatch would be more sensational and more important to United States readers. I would probably run the Loch Ness/Sasquatch story because of the unlikely, improbable event of them happening at roughly the same time. And the geek in me is a little intrigued.

8. You meet the perfect person. Romantically, this person is ideal: You find them physically attractive, intellectually stimulating, consistently funny, and deeply compassionate. However, they have one quirk: This individual is obsessed with Jim Henson's gothic puppet fantasy The Dark Crystal. Beyond watching it on DVD at least once a month, he/she peppers casual conversation with Dark Crystal references, uses Dark Crystal analogies to explain everyday events, and occasionally likes to talk intensely about the film's "deeper philosophy."

Would this be enough to stop you from marrying this individual?

Seriously? Do I need to remind every one that I am a comic fan? I could do the same exact thing with Banshee and the X-Men. And I am sure I do that now anyway. So yeah, no biggie here.

"The World According to Banshee"

9. A novel titled Interior Mirror is released to mammoth commercial success (despite middling reviews). However, a curious social trend emerges: Though no one can prove a direct scientific link, it appears that almost 30 percent of the people who read this book immediately become homosexual. Many of these new found homosexuals credit the book for helping them reach this conclusion about their orientation, despite the fact that Interior Mirror is ostensibly a crime novel with no homoerotic content (and was written by a straight man).

Would this phenomenon increase (or decrease) the likelihood of you reading this book?

I hardly read books anyway. I don't think this would sway me either way. I do admit that I would be a little more intrigued by reading it but I don't think it would get me to do it. I don't think it would make me go gay anyway. Now if it was an X-Men comic with Banshee in it then I totally would be all over that. Crime novels hold little interest to me.

10. This is the opening line of Jay McInerney's Bright Lights, Big City: "You are not the kind of guy who would be in a place like this at this time of the morning." Think about that line in the context of the novel (assuming you've read it). Now go to your CD collection and find Heart's Little Queen album (assuming you own it). Listen to the opening riff to "Barracuda."

Which of these two introductions is a higher form of art?

I have not read the novel but I do own "Barracuda" and I love that opening riff. But the question isn't about what I am familiar with and what I like more. Personally I think music, especially rock music gets a bad rap and doesn't get appreciated as an art as much as it should. So I would go with Barracuda.

11. You are watching a movie in a crowded theater. Though the plot is mediocre, you find yourself dazzled by the special effects. But with twenty minutes left in the film, you are struck with an undeniable feeling of doom: You are suddenly certain your mother has just died. There is no logical reason for this to be true, but you are certain of it. You are overtaken with the irrational metaphysical sense that--somewhere--your mom has just perished. But this is only an intuitive, amorphous feeling; there is no evidence for this, and your mother has not been ill.
Would you immediately exit the theater, or would you finish watching the movie?

I would leave the theater and try to call my mom. If she didn't answer her phone, I would call my sister. If she wasn't with mom, I would be on my way up to house. I don't ignore those feelings, usually when I get feelings like this they are dead on the money. Pun fully intended.

The world will be around tomorrow so I can catch this flick at a later time.

====
Well, that was a little more intensive and thought provoking than I thought it would be. I still will finish up the rest of the questions but I am curious to see how you guys respond.

That's the Half!

Day 183

You know what today is? Today is Day 183 and that means I am at my halfway point of my 365 Day Challenge! I only have 182 more days to blog!

It doesn't feel like I have written 183 blog posts in a row but on the other hand it does feel like I have been doing this for longer than six months.

The last month has been the hardest for me. I was running out of ideas and out of energy but now knowing that I am halfway done I feel a little more energized.

So celebrate my fellow bloggers!

It is all downhill from here!

Now let me share some advice for my fellow bloggers. I know writing at times has been a chore and sometimes the spirit is willing but the body is beat. But look at what you have accomplished. Take time to read a few of your older blog posts. I am sure there are things you blogged about that you have already forgotten. Now aren't you glad that you are blogging? Hasn't it been worth it?

Blogging daily has been a fun ritual. Whether I am recording things that recently happened or trying to remember and document the past, I feel like I have learned a lot and all the hard work has paid off. I am also thankful for my crew of fellow bloggers. I appreciate that you are taking the time to blog. Not only does it push me to do my own blog but it also has given me a chance to get to know you better. And it also has given me a ton of ideas I can steal. Each one of you has helped in your own way to make me work harder in accomplishing this challenge and my own personal goals. My only advice to my fellow bloggers is to keep plugging away. But I also think it would be wise that sometime this week you take just fifteen minutes and generate a list of what you would like to blog about. Blog about it on your blog, just save it as a draft and refer to it when you are out of ideas. And if the mood hits you, get writing!

Now to those that read my blog that are not currently blogging. I only have one thing to say to you.

Don't think that your blog won't be interesting, don't think that you have nothing to say, don't think that you don't know how to blog. You now have friends that have done it before. They can help you set up a blog, they can help you by suggesting ideas, they can help motivate you to do it.

Take the challenge and surprise yourself.

I know you can do it. You know you can do it. I triple-dog-dare you to do it!

Sedated, Caught and Tagged

Day 159

I was all set with what my blog was going to be today (List-Mania) and I was catching up on my fellow blogger's blogs when I noticed that I have been tagged. Or at least I think I have been tagged. All I know if that Lewis tagged a "Matt" on her blog and I am thinking that has to be me. How many Matts does she know that blogs too?

So how this works is that I write 7 things about me, and 5 things that make me smile. And then I get to pick someone and tag then to do the same. You'll find out who I picked at the end of my blog.

7 Things about Me...

1. The number 28 is my favorite number. I was born on the 28th (and if it was a day later, I wouldn't be around) and it has appeared throughout my life in strange ways. Like those numbers in Lost. One of my favorite football players wore this number too.

2. Those who knew me in high school knew that I was not the biggest sports guy. But I like sports quite a bit actually. I even coached the 9th Grade Girl's Basketball team (ages 14-15) down in Riverton, Utah for 3 years. It was one of the best experiences that I have ever had. And that will be a future blog.

3. When I get tired I tend to ramble on and on and on.

4. I have a crush on Winona Ryder. Always have and always will.

5. I absolutely loathe Satan's fruit. You might know them from their commonly known name: ONIONS. But I will eat onion rings. Go figure...

6. Once a year for about a week or so I get to badger and test out new police recruits for Bridgerland. They put me in scenarios to help train new officers. Nothing like getting paid to scream obscenities at cops. I get to play drunk and shoot at them with guns loaded with paint bullets. I think my family would be shocked at my behavior!

7. I love animals and love to watch nature shows. One of my favorite shows was Animal Precinct. It is a reality show set in New York City (where I served my LDS Mission) where you follow the ASPCA's Humane Law Enforcement Division as they work as advocates for the five million pets and other animals in New York City. Most of the time that show made me sad.

5 Things That Make Me Smile

1. Music. I love music and can appreciate any type of music. Music alters my mood, it can pump me up, it can relax me and it can help me write. And it does more than that. I don't know what I would do without my iPod.

2. Animals. Watching them play always makes me smile. Some of my favorite animals are Killdeer birds, cats, platypuses (of course) and bunnies. I will be one of those old grandpas that sit in a chair and look out the window while stroking one of my cats.

3. Sitting cows. Something about these fat animals sitting all polite and daintily just makes me laugh.

4. Fresh donuts.

5. The Simpsons. I can always watch this show and I quote them relentlessly.

So who should I tag? How about my fellow bloggers (I do like saying that) that start with a "J"? So Jennifer and Jaimee, you're It!

Snake-Man!

Day 158

Some days I know exactly what I want to blog about and other days it is a struggle. Today was going to be a struggle since I am still feeling kinda ill and I have no idea what I am going to blog.

But then I checked my e-mail today and I got a nice e-mail along with a cool picture and I knew exactly what I could blog about. I have a great family and a great extended family too that has always been very supportive of me.

Snake-Man!

My mom's sister Margo sent me a picture of a superhero that she drew awhile ago. When I was younger I always looked up to my Aunt Margo for her artistic abilities and I still look up to her for that. She has a real gift that she likes to share with her family and friends. One of my favorite things she did was she took a piece of wood and painted a pheasant on it and then stained it. It hung in my grandparent's home and I absolutely loved it. I must have gotten my love and knack for drawing and art from her.

I am glad that she is following my blog. There have been many wonderful things to come out of doing this blog and by reading my fellow blogger's blog. I feel that I have learned a lot and that I am closer to these people and that they know me better.

Thanks to all my readers! I appreciate your comments and e-mails. And thanks for the drawing Margo. It is awesome.
