I am not sure if my little experience qualifies as a true "First Kiss" but I am counting it. When I was in the 3rd Grade I was kissed by a girl named Carmen. Ar first I thought she was cute but then when she kissed me, I hated her. Hmmmm... now that I think about it, that was something that became standard.
Here is Logan and his 3rd grade class. Here I thought I was hot stuff in the 3rd grade and then I look at my kid and I think he is just a little kid. I wonder if he has a crush on any of the girls in his class.

Logan: The Good Omen
I have to say that I am very, very lucky to have Logan. Since the moment he was born he has been a good omen. Even though he splashed me when he was born, he has been a good thing in my life.
The first night, after he was born, I spent the evening at the hospital. I held him as I watched the New York Jets defeat the New England Patriots for the AFC East Title.
Fast forward 8 years (or so) and another big Logan milestone was on the same day as a big game for the Jets. Yesterday, on January 8th, Logan was baptized.
He was a little nervous. That might be putting it a little mildly, he was pretty nervous. He wouldn't be quiet all morning until we got to the church. And then he zipped up tighter than the white jumper I had to wear. I am sure he became even more nervous when he had to share the dressing room with two other boys and two other dads. But we got dressed in our white jumpers and made it to the chapel and sat on the front row. I can tell he was still nervous. My jumper was a little tight, I had to suck in my gut the whole time and I had to get up slowly from sitting since that thing rode up a road that is not travelled much. I know, I know, too much information. I am sorry but I want to remember this special experience.
Some of my family took part in the program. Logan asked Grandma Breinholt to play a special musical number on the piano and it was beautiful. It certainly set the tone for the meeting. Aunt Lynn was asked to give a talk about the Holy Ghost and she did so well. I am not sure if she was nervous or if she was a little emotional but I have never heard Lynn speak so softly (it is not like she yells all the time or anything like that). The talks were perfect and then it was time for Logan to be dunked.
When I was baptized, I had to go under three times! I wore a belt that was way too long and it kept coming to the surface when my dad baptized me. Logan didn't have a belt with his jumper and we practiced a ton of times beforehand. But according to Aaron and Gregg, Logan didn't make it the first time. His knee poked out of the water so I had to do it again. Logan is definitely my son alright!
I whispered to him that we did a test run and we did it again and got it right. Afterwards we dressed (again nervously in a crowded dressing room) and we went to another room for the confirmation. I am so blessed and so glad that Logan chose me to do both. The confirmation went very well, I could feel the Spirit. I am so proud of my special little guy.
After the confirmation, Bishop Hebdon asked Kristy if she would bare her testimony. That didn't surprise me at all, I think the Bishopric likes to get Kristy to bear her testimony. Then the Primary President spoke to Logan and then the Bishop concluded the meeting after he spoke a few words. My Bishop always says the perfect things. I asked his Aunt Sherry to say the closing prayer and then we met over at our church to have some lunch.
The Bishop and his illegal family (not sure I want to blog this inside joke, I don't want him to get into trouble!) came along with my dad and his family, Jennifer and her family, my mom and most of Kristy's family.
I am very grateful for my family and my extended (in-laws) family. They treat me so good and they are always so supportive. It was a perfect day. Mom and Dad came over for a short visit and Renae and Gregg came over (so Renae had a place to feed Ty) and it was nice to sit and relax and chat. We made a quick impromptu visit to get some Aggie Ice Cream and then we came home to watch the Jets game.
A perfect ending to a perfect day. The Jets did win in the last seconds of the game, so yes, Logan is a good omen for me. But I would trade all the Jet victories to have a special day like this with him and my family again.

Shaving Logan
For the last nine years or so I have been cutting my own hair. And now it is getting easier with the balding but I still cannot get the bottom of my head/top of my neck on my own. Kristy, being the nice wife she is, will cut/shave that part for me. She did it for me today before she headed out to work and I appreciate it. While she was cutting my hair I started to get the giggles. It reminded me of a certain picture of Logan.
So I am sure you know what happened next. We took some of my hair and called Logan in and tried to make him a moustache.
It didn't help that the hair tickled him and Kristy and I were dying laughing. He kept blowing it off and soon he just gave up.
That is one of the best things about having a kid. You get to do all sorts of stuff to them!

Soccer Days
Day 175
Hopefully Spring/Summer is really here and not fooling itself. I know that calendar-wise, Spring should already be here and since Logan has started soccer, it should officially be here. But then on the first day of practice, it snowed. And then a few days later at his game, I got sunburned. Welcome to the crazy spring weather of Utah. Hot one moment and freezing the next!
Last year Logan played soccer and he had a good time but I don't think he really learned anything except that he should kick the soccer ball and not touch it with his hands. He also learned that the goals switch sides at the half and that he wears different colors for home and away games but I think that is really all he learned. Kindergarten soccer is like watching a cloud of mosquitoes following each other.
This year has already been a little different. We have had only one practice and Logan went to his 4th game this afternoon. And he is playing with a bunch of kids from the 2nd grade that know what they are doing and I think Logan gets a little lost. The first game his coach asked him what position he wanted to play, defender or forward and Logan had no idea what he was talking about. Usually after his coach gives him a position or some instructions, I bring Logan over to give him some further explaination. But he is getting it. The coach must like him because he plays most of the games and rarely sits out.
The other thing I have noticed about Logan this year is that he doesn't hang around his parents when he is not playing. He will come between quarters so he could drink some water but that is it. He would rather hang around his coach and teammates. And he has manned up a bit too. In the first game he took a nasty blow to the face. Another kid kicked it right into his face, I mean it really cracked him hard. At first he just grabbed his face but continued to run on. Kristy and I yelled at him to keep going, we didn't want to make a big deal about it. And he ran for about 2 seconds before he started to cry a bit. But he didn't run to us, he ran to his coach and then came over to us. But he was only with us for about 2 seconds too. Once he had a drink and realized he was going to live, he ran to join his teammates and got right back in the game. The next game he got kicked right in the gut and he lost his breath but he went to his coach who swatted him on the back to make him breathe. I went over there and in about two seconds he was better and ready to get back in the game. I guess when the game is on the line, he really can take it like a man!
He has a real good team this year and Logan is quite excited to be winning all the time. His team is 4-0. Logan just needs to learn to be a little more aggressive and go after the ball more. But I expect that he will get more used to it as time goes on. I can tell already that all the ball players including Logan have learned quite a bit in this short amount of time.

Logan is using his two hands to talk to each other while the game is going on. I hope they are at least talking about the game.

I think Logan gets the duties of defender and forward mixed up. But he did have a good clear out while being defender.

The kids like to cheer at the end of the game because they know a treat is coming up.

Logan and the Aggies
Day 153
Last night we went out as a family to the Future Aggie Athlete benefit dinner sponsored by Utah State University. This was aimed at kids in elementary school and get them to try out various sports taught by Aggie athletes.
Logan had a lot of fun trying out the different sports and did much better than I thought he would. He can be a shy kid and I was a little worried that he wouldn't participate as much as I wanted him to but he proved wrong.
The first station we went to was soccer. He was taught how to dribble and kick the ball but his favorite was using his head to score a goal. I think the girls that were running the station were having just as good of a time as the kids were. They were really cute with Logan, I overheard them say how cute he was. He must take after his dad.
The next station he had a choice of either gymnastics or hockey. I would have loved for him to try gymnastics but I was more proud that he chose hockey. There he learned how to handle the puck (it was a tennis ball) how to pass and of course how to shoot. The stick was a little big for him but that didn't stop him from doing slap shots.

But I was really proud of Logan when they announced the next station, football. I looked over and he pumped his fist and said YES! There he learned how to carry the ball, throw a spiral, run a route and catch the ball and defend. Logan has never been one to catch the ball (think of George Michael on Arrested Development) but he tried his hardest to catch the ball and caught it a couple of times. He even scored a touchdown with a little girl hanging on to him trying to bring him down. He didn't stiff arm her he just twirled his way into the end zone.
The next station was his favorite. He loved volleyball which took Kristy and I by surprise. He did very well bumping the ball in the air. It was cute to see him beam when the girl he was working with gave him five for doing it right.
The last station was basketball. I felt bad for Logan since the ball is so big and heavy but he really tried hard to shoot the ball. He did make a basket (where he gave a double fist pump) against one of the Aggie girls. He asked them to show him an alley-oop and they did just for him.
Afterwards we had a dinner catered by Cafe Sabor (tasty) and had a raffle. Kristy won a $20 gift certificate so she could buy some Aggie gear. He also got his own t-shirt. He had a fantastic and fun night. The Aggie athletes really made a positive impact on him and I thought they did very well.

Logan and the Magical Poo
Day 151
Sure sounds like some sort of children's book about potty training right? It isn't, it was just one of those gross things your kids do. It is hard to explain it but I think anyone that is a parent or have taken care of children can understand. Just when you think you have seen it all, just when you think you have handled it all, your kid throws you a curve ball.
Let me set up the scene. Logan was about a year old and it was lunchtime. He was in a diaper, wearing long pants with socks and was sitting in his high chair eating lunch.
Suddenly, Kristy got a whiff of poo and thought maybe Logan had pooped his pants. She leaned in and checked his diaper and could not see or smell anything. But for some reason he still stunk.
Then she looked down on the floor and found what couldn't be poo but it looked and smelled like it. On closer inspection, sure enough, it was poo. And a magical one in that.
Somehow, Logan had pooped out of his diaper, through his long pants and on to the floor while sitting (I said sitting people!) in his high chair! And when we changed his diaper there was no sign of it. It was like it magically appeared from thin air!
It is a pretty neat trick and one that I am glad Logan has not repeated since.

Egging it Up
Day 150!
Last night was Family Home Evening. For those that do not know what this is, we are taught in our church to spend Monday nights with our family doing an activity, a lesson and to find out what the family is doing. Logan wanted Grandma Platis to attend so we called her up and she joined us.
We had a fantastic dinner (which I will have to blog about later) and had a nice lesson taught by Logan. Then for our activity we colored and dyed Easter eggs. We tried these new color tablets that promised vivid colors and I have to admit I was really surprised. They really were pretty colorful.
We have colored eggs with Logan before (and Grandma Platis as well) and we have always enjoyed this activity. One of my favorite pictures of Logan and I was when we were coloring eggs.
This picture is a couple years old but I love it for some reason.

Grandma and Logan hard at work. Grandma Platis initially said she would just watch but she ended up coloring eggs anyway.

Happy Logan with a nice blue egg.

Logan apparently didn't want me to eat his egg.

Logan thought the coloring looked like Kool-Aid. I had to stop him from drinking it.

Logan did this cool one too.

This was my last egg. It had a very nice forest green color to it. Yeah, I am pretty proud of it.

Star Wars Kid
Day 136
I was one of the lucky ones that saw Star Wars when it first came out in the theaters back in 1977. I was only 3 years old but I LOVED it. Of course, what kid that did see it didn't love it?
I have been a Star Wars fan all my life. While the original trilogy is still by far the best, I can appreciate the newer prequel trilogy. But I am not here to debate that.
I was so excited when I became a parent because then I can share Star Wars with my kids. Logan has certainly taken a shining to it; just like I did as a kid. He has his own lightsaber, Lego toys, action figures and video games. In fact when Kristy became pregnant with Logan we bought him Star Wars toys not even knowing (or caring) if our baby was going to be a boy or a girl.

Logan is just like his dad; we both LOVE Star Wars.
And sometimes Logan plays around with his lightsaber and Snuggie cloak like the Star Wars Kid.

Logan and Balloonie
Day 122
Yesterday, my wife Kristy chronicled Logan losing another tooth in her blog. This time he lost his other top middle tooth so now he has a big gap that is so cute.
Kristy took a picture for the blog and the picture turned out pretty awesome. He was wearing a black shirt and the background was all black so all you could see was his head.
It reminded us of Balloonie. Who is Balloonie you ask?
BACK STORY!
To find out the true origin of Balloonie, you will have to watch this episode of Phineas and Ferb.
Trust me.

Pic of the Week: Life with Logan
Day 105
I remember back before we had Logan Kristy and I used to watch VH1's Behind the Music episodes almost every Sunday night. For those that don't know, Behind the Music was a TV show that took a musical artist and we saw their story. How they became a band, what happened to them, what they are doing now and so forth.
I learned two things watching that show. If you belonged in a metal band, someone would die somehow. Seriously, it happened to Def Leppard, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC and you can count Motley Crue since one of the members was actually pronounced dead before somehow coming back to life. The other thing that I learned was how much family meant to these hard rockers. Every single one of them would talk about how much they love their kids and how that was the best part of their life. And I used to think "Are you kidding me?"
I would love to be a rock star and perform in front of huge crowds and tour. They had it all and their kids were the best thing that happened to them? Seriously?
Then Logan came along and suddenly I realized how right they were. I think one of the best things about having a kid of your own is introducing them to things you enjoy. I have tried my hardest in getting Logan to enjoy what I enjoy. For instance, Kristy is not a fan of hamburgers and I love them. She is more of a pizza person. But Logan LOVES cheeseburgers now so I have him on my side when we decide to treat ourselves by going out to eat.

He is willing to pose for my blog and he likes Banshee! (I'll have to explain who Banshee is in a later post)

He is a New York Jets fan! Poor kid, I shouldn't subject him to that!

He is a big Star Wars fan. He loves watching and playing Star Wars.

He was Wolverine for his 1st Halloween. I'll have a separate blog entry for this. I made a movie with him and it was better than Wolverine Origins.

He can be silly when he feels like it.

He loves cats. Sorry dog people and cat haters. We love cats. But we are not fanatical about them though.

He loves to read and loves the comics I have got for him. I cannot wait till he gets a little older so he can really dig the ones I have.
I guess having a kid is a cool thing.

Pic of the Week: Snugs with Logan
Day 92
One thing that I did not expect as becoming a dad is how much I like to sit and snuggle with my kid. Tuesday nights Kristy is out with the Young Women (a church group) and it is just Logan and I. We will usually watch something special, something just for the two of us. Lately it has been the Jeff Corwin Experience.

Logan really spoils me. He is still good for a hug and cuddle. Sunday nights are just as fun. We typically make some treats (usually Muddy Buddies) and watch America's Funniest Home Videos.

Which is what we are doing right after I publish this blog.

Life with Logan: Growing with his Stocking
Day 53
Like I mentioned and celebrated yesterday, Logan was born very close to Christmas. While in the hospital, Logan was visited by Santa who brought him some neat gifts. One of the gifts was this large stocking that we could fit him in. He was certainly small enough, his legs were no where near touching the bottom (that is if you could make him stretch). We could have fit three Logan's in that stocking comfortably. We brought him home in that stocking too.
We now have a tradition of making Logan stand in the stocking so we can see how much he has grown. Every year we make him do it. And that will continue until he moves out. Maybe we'll send him the stocking and make him take a picture of himself in it before he gets any presents from us! We'll think of something.

It is so amazing to see how fast he grows from one year to the next.

I'll post the most recent one after Christmas.

Happy Birthday Logan!
Day 52
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LOGAN!
Seven years ago today my little buddy was born. He has been such a blessing in this household, he has such a keen sense of humor, a helping hand and a cute smile. He is always wanting to play with me and cuddle with me when I need it.

So what exactly happened seven years ago?
DISCLAIMER: First time pregnant ladies should not read this or those with weak stomachs. This does get pretty graphic even without pictures.
Why is it that when we hear that a lady is pregnant we tell her all the awful things that happen at birth? Survivor's guilt perhaps? Because when people tell you how beautiful it is and how grand they are really lying? Okay, that is not totally true.
Kristy was due with Logan on Christmas. My mom and sister's family came down to see us (we were living in Salt Lake at the time) before Christmas since we were probably not going to venture up north to Logan (about 2 hours by car) with Logan coming anytime. Kristy was complaining of pain but it seemed like it was not serious. After a nice visit with them, Kristy went to bed early. The next day was Sunday, she was still in some pain but we went to Church anyway. Kristy must have been feeling a bit sick since she came home halfway through the services. I told our Bishop that I should go home to make sure she is okay and they said they would cover teaching my class. I came home and Kristy was really feeling it. We had our annual family Christmas party so we packed up our food and headed to her mom's house. I thought I should bring our hospital stuff "just because". Kristy was really in pain, she could barely breath and she couldn't even get her shoes on.
We hopped in the car and went to her mom's house. We get out there and I could tell that she was in labor. Her sister Sherry came out and saw Kristy's face and body language and immediately knew that she was in labor. We still went inside and we delivered our food all the while both Sherry and Kristy's mom were yelling at us to leave to the hospital. I felt bad for Kristy's other sister Ranae and her husband Gregg. She was pregnant with her first and they were pale as ghosts when they saw Kristy.
The hospital was about twenty minutes away but luckily traffic was good and we made it. We walked in and I told the lady that Kristy was in labor. The nurse took her to the first room to examine her. The nurse peered down there and quickly looked again. Then she grabbed another nurse for a quick second opinion. The second nurse yelled out "We better get her in a delivery room before she gives birth!" Both Kristy and I were shocked. Apparently she had already dilated to a '7'. I asked the nurse if I should grab our stuff and she said "You better just get your camera now if you have it! And hurry!" I ran back to the car and got on my cell and called Kristy's mom and told her. I then called my mom to pass the news.
By the time I got back, Kristy was already having hard labor. The nurses didn't have time to hook her up to any machines. Our doctor came in (he was the one on call) and saw and he was still in his suit. He peered in and suddenly the water broke and he gets up and smiles "I better get my stuff on!" Kristy did get hooked up to the machine that tracks the contractions and in between one we drew her blood, but only barely. The doctor came back and we were on our way. We were at the point of no return. Kristy had no time to get the epidural, there would not be enough time to get it working before she would deliver.
Now let me give you my opinion on being there for a birth. I don't want to see it. Not at all. I don't care about seeing the 'miracle of life', I just have absolutely no interest in it. I will be there supporting my wife but that doesn't mean I have to watch it.
Everything was progressing really well. We were a few contractions away from the birth of our child. Suddenly our doctor yells out "It's crowning! Wow!" Now what would any person do after hearing that? You would want to take a peek at what he is amazed at right? So I forgot what I was doing and I looked. What I saw only last a second. No, I didn't faint. I got squirted. Yes, you heard me. SQUIRTED. The baby shot right out and I got hit in the hair, all down my face, on my shirt, on my pants and on my shoes. I was covered with baby juice! I about hurled. The nurses were all excited and wiping the baby off but what about me?! I wiped myself (as much as I could) on Kristy's hospital gown sleeve. It got me in the crevice of my mouth!

(That is how I felt after I was squirted upon with Baby Juice!)
Kristy and I decided not to find out the baby's sex. The doctor announced it was a boy but neither of us were surprised. We knew it was Logan.
They gave me the baby and they had to assist Kristy. Unfortunately for her, she had quite a rip and she had lost a lot of blood. She was close to having a blood transfusion. I remember seeing Logan and his big eyes. I welcomed him into my family and I looked up and I saw Kristy's sister Sherry and her kids. I motioned them NOT to come in just yet. I didn't want her kids to see the buckets of blood all over.
They finally came in with the rest of her family. It was convenient for the Christmas party right? I let her parents hold Logan while I called my family. Kristy recovered and finally I came home. It was strange to come home all by myself. The first thing I did? I took those jeans off and washed them. I threw out the shirt and socks. I couldn't sleep that night so I put together our new entertainment center that Jennifer and Justin got for us.

It was worth the squirting to get Logan. That doesn't mean I liked it, it just means it was worth it.

Christmas Memories: In Pictures
Day 51
With Logan's birthday tomorrow and Christmas coming up, my time for blogging is getting shorter and shorter. Today is just a collection of Christmas pictures from my past.
Decorating the Christmas tree was one of my favorite things to do when I was a kid. That has certainly changed, I am not a fan of it now. We always had a real tree when I was young, we would buy the spray cans of snow and blast the tree full of snow. We then would put our homemade ornaments (I had this duck I made when I was two) and we would put tinsel over it carefully to make it look like icicles. It took us hours to get our tree up and decorated.

My first Christmas when I was married was certainly a fun and unique Christmas. We lived in a trailer on the campus of Utah State University. We barely had room for us and we knew that a tree would be impossible. I came home from work one night and found that Kristy had taken our garland we used for our wedding reception and fashioned it into a Christmas tree that she put in the corner. It was so cute. Looking back, it was fun to be poor students.
One of the best Christmas mornings ever! As far as gifts go. This was the year I got a ton of hockey stuff. I got my first hockey stick, an Edmonton Oiler jersey (see? my jersey-wearing days started early!) and this cool hockey game. It was like a foozball game only it had hockey players. You can also see in this picture that I got a Super Merlin and a metal cast Star Destroyer (my favorite Star Wars ship) which I still have today.
Another fantastic Christmas morning. I was certainly spoiled. This was the Christmas when I got the Atari 2600 and some games. I was so excited! You can also see on the right that I got a ton of Return of the Jedi action figures and in my hands is a ton of hockey stickers. I couldn't wait to tear into the Atari.

We brought Logan home on Christmas Eve from the hospital. My dad was on the road (he was a trucker) and he came by on his way home for Christmas to see Logan. It was so nice to have my dad drop in on Christmas to see his first grandson.

Logan didn't want to sit on Santa's lap this year. He seems to be wishy-washy when it comes to this. But one year he surprised us all when he said he would sit on his lap. And we have photographic proof of it!
