Day 357

An oldie but goody...

I don't remember what year this was taken. But it certainly was late seventies or early eighties.

Mission Memoirs: Elder Abuse

Day 337

In my last area in Brooklyn Elder Nielson and I used to pass this bus stop all the time.

I just HAD to stop and take a picture. There are many forms of Elder abuse.

Pic of the Week: Riding the Bull

Day 323

The Wall Street Bull or the Bowling Green Bull, is a 3,200 kilograms (7,100 lb) bronze sculpture by Arturo Di Modica that stands in Bowling Green Park near Wall Street in Manhattan, New York City.

Standing 11 feet (3.4 m) tall and measuring 16 feet (4.9 m) long, the oversize sculpture depicts a bull, the symbol of aggressive financial optimism and prosperity, leaning back on its haunches and with its head lowered as if ready to charge. The sculpture is both a popular tourist destination which draws thousands of people a day, as well as one of the most iconic images of New York and a Wall Street icon symbolizing Wall Street and the Financial District.

And I have rode the beast!

I was serving in Staten Island and we had one of our approved Manhattan trips. My companion and I were walking home to catch the Staten Island ferry and we passed by this huge statue. No one was around and I felt this incredible urge to ride the bull.

I grabbed him by the horns and hopped on. I was amazed by the sheer size of the animal. And like any bucking bull I had difficulty in staying on top. They must polish that bull because I kept sliding off.

Now if I can only conquer the actual financial markets like I conquered this bull!

Pic of the Week: Comic Book Logan

Day 272

I have not done a Pic of the Week blog post in months. Unfortunately my camera fell into the river and has passed on. Part of me is happy since it gives us an excuse to buy a better camera but it leaves us in a lurch since we have no camera at the moment and probably won't get one until later this week.

I was looking through all of our pictures looking for a topic to blog about and found a bunch of Logan reading my comic books and thought they would be fun to blog about.

I have to be a cool dad. How many dads out there have thousands of comics in their house? The older Logan gets the more of my comics he gets to read. And I have a ton load he can start off with. When I wrote for a comic book blog a few years back, I used Logan in some of my pics.

Logan is an Alan Davis fan in waiting. Why not start him with some of the best comics out there?

The comic Secret Wars II will go down as one of the WORST comic story lines. Logan is shocked that I paid $50 for this hardcover collecting the entire series. If he only knew that it retails for $100. And yes, it is not a great story but it came out when I first started reading comics so it has a heavy nostalgic factor.

One of my favorite characters, one of my favorite writers and my favorite artist. So this must be my most favorite hardcover right? Logan agrees, it is awesome!

My comic book friends make fun of me because I almost have a complete run of Quasar. A very cheesy superhero. But sometimes the cheese is the best part, you know, like on a pizza. Logan is totally mocking me in this pic.

There are two things wrong with this picture. One, I would never let Logan drink a full can of Mountain Dew Livewire. And 2nd, I wouldn't let him read Watchmen. At least not until he is much older. He totally faked this picture looking like he was really enthralled by the book. It is one of the best graphic novels but not one for looking to read comics like Superman.

Logan is such a sport. Here he is posing with my favorite comic book character and X-Man (and will be in the new X-Men movie) Banshee. I was so excited for a Banshee action figure but was so disappointed in how stupid he looks.

Pic of the Week: The Good Ol' Days

Day 167

I kinda feel bad for kids growing up these days.

While kids today have stuff that I never thought or dreamed of having I do think that I had it better.

Back in the good ol' days it was easier to get away with stuff. Much easier. There was no internet so my parents couldn't log on and check my grades. It was far easier to catch Deficiency Notices in the mail since e-mail was not invented yet. And there were no cell phones so if I skipped school, the school would have to call home. And luckily for me, my mom was at work and not at home. And even when the answering machine came along it was way easy to just delete the message.

Which brings me to this picture:

What does this have to do with getting away with stuff? My dad used to like to take pictures of us and I was not in the mood to smile. So Jennifer whispered something to me to make me laugh. And do you know what she said?

Remember when we farted on the phone?

When Jennifer would babysit me we would have loads of fun. We would watch TV and play games and play the record player full blast and pretend that we were rock stars. Sometimes we would dress up and play, sometimes we would play outside, sometimes we would try to freak out our neighbor's daughter and sometimes we would fart on the phone.

While I think Caller ID is one of the greatest things invented I do miss those days when you could crank call people and get away with it. Nowadays you can't do this without being caught and then probably sued. We didn't do this all the time, in fact I can only remember doing it twice. One time by ourselves and one time with Jennifer's friend Mindy. We would call up a random person or someone we didn't like and then attempt to fart on the phone. But we would end up laughing so hard that we could only (and barely) make farty or burp noises on the phone. And we never got caught.

Until one time we called a restaurant called "Chicken on the Way" and we cranked them a few times since they would always answer the phone. And then they called us back and they scared us straight. But my cranking days didn't end there.

One of my favorite ways to ask a girl to one of the high school dances (you had to ask creatively) was to ask them to take a survey from Utah State University. I would ask these stupid questions and then eventually I would ask some personal questions (like if they ever used deodorant on their feet) and then finally I would say:

"It looks like you pass with flying colors. Now I have one more important question to ask you. Would you like to attend the Christmas Dance with Matt Platis? Please answer him in your own way and I will make sure he has a copy of all your answers."

And then I would hang up the phone. These days I wouldn't be able to get away with that.

My friend Damond LOVED to play pranks on people through the phone. I would come over and would call some buddies or when he was cheerleader, the other girl cheerleaders and then give them a hard time on the phone. I would pretend I was some cousin of one of the cheerleaders (obviously not the one I was calling) and then try to ask them out on a date. But I would either act completely stupid or completely cocky. We would laugh and laugh and Damond would tell me how they reacted the next day during cheerleading practice. Damond was the perfect guy to do this with since he knew those girls so way and there was NO WAY they would think it was him.

I would now like to formally apologize to those cheerleaders. Damond put me up to it!

Like I said, there is no way we could do that today.

Pic of the Week: Life with Logan

Day 105

I remember back before we had Logan Kristy and I used to watch VH1's Behind the Music episodes almost every Sunday night. For those that don't know, Behind the Music was a TV show that took a musical artist and we saw their story. How they became a band, what happened to them, what they are doing now and so forth.

I learned two things watching that show. If you belonged in a metal band, someone would die somehow. Seriously, it happened to Def Leppard, Metallica, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC and you can count Motley Crue since one of the members was actually pronounced dead before somehow coming back to life. The other thing that I learned was how much family meant to these hard rockers. Every single one of them would talk about how much they love their kids and how that was the best part of their life. And I used to think "Are you kidding me?"

I would love to be a rock star and perform in front of huge crowds and tour. They had it all and their kids were the best thing that happened to them? Seriously?

Then Logan came along and suddenly I realized how right they were. I think one of the best things about having a kid of your own is introducing them to things you enjoy. I have tried my hardest in getting Logan to enjoy what I enjoy. For instance, Kristy is not a fan of hamburgers and I love them. She is more of a pizza person. But Logan LOVES cheeseburgers now so I have him on my side when we decide to treat ourselves by going out to eat.

He is willing to pose for my blog and he likes Banshee! (I'll have to explain who Banshee is in a later post)

He is a New York Jets fan! Poor kid, I shouldn't subject him to that!

He is a big Star Wars fan. He loves watching and playing Star Wars.

He was Wolverine for his 1st Halloween. I'll have a separate blog entry for this. I made a movie with him and it was better than Wolverine Origins.

He can be silly when he feels like it.

He loves cats. Sorry dog people and cat haters. We love cats. But we are not fanatical about them though.

He loves to read and loves the comics I have got for him. I cannot wait till he gets a little older so he can really dig the ones I have.

I guess having a kid is a cool thing.

Pic of the Week: The Pysanka (Easter Egg)

Day 98

When I was younger, we as a family took a trip east about 60-65 miles of Edmonton and visited the city of Vegreville. We visited the city's most famous monument, a giant Easter Egg. And it is something that I will not forget.

First, a little history (thanks to the Vegreville and District Chamber of Commerce for this information. You can see more at www.vegrevillechamber.com) of the egg.

(You can see my dad, sister and I all under that egg. It was raining slightly.)

The city of Vegreville wanted to honor the Royal Mounted Canadian Police (RCMP) for its service and protection of the early Ukraine settlers. They decided on a large Pysanka (Easter Egg) to symbolize the peace and security the Mounties had offered them.

Interestingly enough the design of the project was done by a computer scientist, Professor Ronald Resch from the University of Utah. They had to develop new computer programs to develop the egg. The Pysanka is really an immense jigsaw puzzle containing 524 star patterns, 1,108 equilateral triangles, 3,512 visible facets, 6,978 nuts and bolts, and 177 internal struts. It measures 25.7 feet long, 18 feet wide, and stands 31 feet high.

The dedication message is written in four languages: English, Ukrainian, French and German. It reads: “This Pysanka (Easter Egg) symbolizes the harmony, vitality and culture of the community and is dedicated as a tribute to the One-Hundredth Anniversary of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police who brought peace and security to the largest multi-cultural settlement in all of Canada.”

It was such a cool place to visit. I would love to take Kristy and Logan up there to see it. And eat Ukrainian food like progies. MMMMMMM.

Pic of the Week: Snugs with Logan

Day 92

One thing that I did not expect as becoming a dad is how much I like to sit and snuggle with my kid. Tuesday nights Kristy is out with the Young Women (a church group) and it is just Logan and I. We will usually watch something special, something just for the two of us. Lately it has been the Jeff Corwin Experience.

Logan really spoils me. He is still good for a hug and cuddle. Sunday nights are just as fun. We typically make some treats (usually Muddy Buddies) and watch America's Funniest Home Videos.

Which is what we are doing right after I publish this blog.

Pic of the Week: The Ice Man Cometh

Day 84

A couple of years ago we had a Breinholt Family Reunion up here in Logan and we went up to the lake at Tony Grove, up in Logan Canyon. It was a pretty good time although I will remember it for entirely other different reasons, which I probably shouldn't blog about here publicly.

But for the most part, the reunion was a lot of fun. I remember one incident in particular which made the event memorable (in a good way).

A couple of us (that is me throwing the rock, ahead of me is Steven and Andrea and Renae (yawning) with Logan and Gregg at the front) all decided to go and take a hike on this trail around the lake. It was a nice summer day, the sun was shining (and burning my poor bald head) but it was still very cool up in the mountains. Some of the surrounding areas even still had a few inches of snow. We stopped a few times to try and skip rocks off the lake. My son Logan was having the time of his life. He saw a ton of animals (mostly chipmunks and squirrels) and got to throw big rocks into the lake. Logan is a little competitive kid (wonder where he got it from) and he always wanted to be in the lead and be first down the trail. He was always fighting with his uncle Steven to stay in the lead. Steven had taken the lead and so I told Logan to grab some snow and rub and place it on Steven's leg (he was wearing shorts) to get him out of the way.

Logan was thrilled with this awesome plan and he quickly stopped to pick up some snow. As he was scooping up some snow, a man and his wife (not from our party) walked past us and ahead of us on the trail. Logan finally got some snow and ran towards Steven, at least we thought he was running to Steven. He pushed Steven out of the way and was heading toward the man that passed us thinking it was Steven. I yelled out "That's not Steven!" but it fell on excited and deaf ears. Logan iced the guy that passed us and not Steven. The funny thing is that the guy saw Logan coming and ran away like a frightened little girl. Logan caught him anyway and he yelped out (also like a little girl) when Logan iced him. Logan laughed deviously and then he realized that he iced the wrong guy. He was momentarily stunned and then he tried to get Steven. The man was not happy with what had happened but took it all in stride.

Pic of the Week: Bittersweet

Day 66

We took down our Christmas decorations last night making the end of the season official. It is bittersweet for me, I love having all the decorations up and all the lights but after Christmas our living room is a mess. Taking down the decorations allow us to do some cleaning too.

It is nice to be all done and have a nice clean room to lounge around in but the room suddenly looks so barren and bare.

Before we took all the decorations down I made Logan get into his Christmas stocking so I can take our annual picture. That kid has sure grown, another bittersweet moment.

Pics of the Week: Jets, Cats and Soda!

Day 64

Late blog posting tonight. Unfortunately our church services have changed to 1:30 in the afternoon and with the Jets game on later this evening I have not had much of a chance to blog.

But first things first...

Win and we're in! If the Jets beat the Bengals we are in the playoffs.

THE JETS ACTUALLY WON!

I admit it, I am a pessimistic Jets fan. But then I think any Jets fan is pessimistic. But the Jets stormed out and killed the Bengals 37-0 and secured a Wildcard playoff spot!

And while watching the game I discovered a new favorite soda. I got Henry Weinhard's Black Cherry Creme soda in my Christmas stocking and I was saving it for a special occasion. That soda was so awesome. It had a fantastic black cherry flavor that had a hint of creme. It was like my other favorite soda, Stewart's Cherries and Creme but it had a deeper cherry flavor. I gotta go get me some more of that stuff!

One of my fellow bloggers on her blog mentioned that she loved getting funny pictures of cats. I mentioned that I had one that I loved to look at and laugh and I came across it while looking for some other pictures.

I laugh every time I see this cat laughing.

Pic of the Week: Yummy Christmas Ornaments

Day 49

I think this is the soonest we have decorated for Christmas. It seems like the last few years we get it all done about two or three days before the big day. I have to admit that this year I seem to be a little more excited.

I remember one year we were decorating for Christmas in particular. It was about four years ago. We were in the back room decorating the tree. Logan was trying to help but being so young it was more of us doing it all and watching him to make sure he was not into something he shouldn't be. We were hanging some ornaments on the tree when suddenly we heard this "CRUNCH". It sounded like glass breaking. We immediately look over at Logan (knowing full well he would be the source of the sound) and he had taken a big bite into one of the glass ball ornaments!

We picked him up and Kristy sat him on her knee and I fished around his mouth taking out shards of glass. We don't think he swallowed any, we had recovered enough pieces of the glass ornament that we could probably glue it back together. It was a scary moment and the next day Kristy tossed out all of our old glass decorations.

EDIT: That is the actual glass ornament that Logan chowed down on.

Pic of the Week: Decorating for Christmas

Day 42

We finally got around and decorated our Christmas tree and I am especially excited because this is the first year since I have been married that we have a real tree. We also got all of our lights, garland and stockings up. We also cleaned up everything after so it is all ready for Christmas. I think this is the earliest we have decorated.

I am a sucker for lights. We have about six sets of lights going. I just love Christmas lights. I tried to put some in our window but it just wouldn't work. We have enough lights now that I can easily read!

This was our wedding garland. We put all of Grandma Anderson's homemade decorations on them. The picture just doesn't do it justice.

Logan was in charge of decorating the window. He did a good job.

Kristy was in charge of putting the lights on the Christmas tree. While I do like lights, I HATE putting them on the tree.

And because I love lights so much, I was in charge of of putting lights up. And of course I went overboard. I used the branches we had to cut off the tree and mixed them with the lights.

If Logan acts naughty I get out the large silver Christmas Punishment Spoon!

I put all of our snowmen decorations (we have a ton of them) on our fireplace mantle with a candle behind them. And of course, more lights!

Starting today and ending on Boxing Day, I will have a Christmas-related column. It has been fun trying to think of some Christmas columns. Lots of memories I can share.

Pic of the Week: My Grandma Anhder

Day 35

My mom kept her pictures in this orange cardboard crates (the ones that Mandarin Oranges used to come in) and I loved looking through all the pictures. That old box has now been replaced by a large red bin. The box may not look and feel the same but it still contains the pictures I loved to look at as a kid. Getting this bin of pictures has been great, especially for this blog.

This is a picture of my Grandma Anhder and I when I was very little. I don't remember this at all but that is okay. I have a ton of other great memories of my Grandma. Today would be my Grandma's birthday. Even though she passed away years ago, I still have fond memories of my Grandma.

-Playing Racco and other card games.

-Eating her delicious Chicken Casserole.

-Hearing her tell her favorite joke
How can you tell a happy motorist? They have tons of bugs in their teeth.

-When her and Grandpa came to Edmonton for Christmas. I still have those two Star Wars figures she gave me.

-Visiting her with Kristy and Logan and eating from Big J's.

-Watching the Jazz play basketball and hear her complain about the refs and the other team. But she complained more about Mark Eaton and how he always brought the ball down too low.

-Making her so happy when I would compile a list of NFL players that were from Utah.

-The awesome huge quilt she made for Kristy and I for our wedding. She was always quilting.

-The Black Cap Jam and the Pickled Beets. She was so awesome for making them and sharing them with me.

Grandma was such a neat lady. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to live with her and my Grandpa. It was something that I would never trade for anything. I had the greatest Grandparents.

Pic of the Week: Baddest Living Biker

Day 28

My wrists are hurting and my fingers have been worn down to a nub. Today has been the first day of my challenge that I have not felt like writing/typing. I still have loads to say but as the saying goes "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak".

My wife Kristy is soon to be joining the madness of the 365 Challenge starting December 1st. Her idea for the blog is to post a picture a day and write something about it. Whether it is a current picture that she took that day or something from the past. I like this idea so like a good blogger, I am totally stealing it. So today I am unveiling a new Saturday column called "Pic of the Week". Basically it is the same column as hers only I am going to do it once a week.

So I had to find the perfect picture to blog about and I think I have a winner. This picture (or cover I should say) was taken way back in 1987. My mom and I were moving to the States, leaving my dad and sister behind. So I spent the weekend before we moved with my sister Jennifer. I crashed at her apartment and we hit the sights of Edmonton. We ate at the Progi House (YUM!) and hit the world's largest mall (at the time), West Edmonton Mall. Jennifer spent a ton of money on me and wanted to send me off in fashion.

Aren't we bad? It was such a perfect gift, I couldn't forget my sister after making the cover of Biker Lifestyle. We took another couple of pictures while at West Ed too. I know, I said I would post ONE pic a week but these were just too good not to pass up.

FUN FACT: Can you spot the glaring typo? Drives me nuts to see that this would be misspelled.

I had a lot of fun and I didn't think I would miss my sister all that much but I did. It was a long time before I got to see her again. Now, she lives just blocks away and I am glad I have her in my life. Thanks sis!
